This is the most prolific cichlid in Caño Cristales, Sierra de la Macarena, Colombia. They spend their time near the river banks finding shelter between Macarenia clavigera aquatic plants and the quartz sandstone bedrock.
I have seen them feeding, picking on the periphyton found on the aquatic plants, and biting the green freshwater sponges that grow on the rocks.
As with other Aequidens species, both parents take care of their fry.
Juveniles are very abundant. Larger specimens are less abundant due to locals fishing them for food or being preyed upon by Paleosuchus trigonatus or Paleosuchus palpebrosus caiman that also live in the river.
